Starting Point

Description

From the center of Bagnoli della Rosandra/Boljunec, climb up into the Breg Valley, partly cultivated with vines, olive trees, and a few vegetable gardens, to reach the village of Sant’Antonio in Bosco/Boršt and the route of the old Val Rosandra railway, now the Cottur cycle path connecting Trieste to Hrpelje, where you turn left towards Trieste. ALTERNATIVE: you can reach the former railway line via a more scenic route through the Val Rosandra. From the square in front of the Premuda Refuge in Bagnoli Superiore/Gornji konec, climb towards the Vedetta di Moccò and then continue on the CAI 15 towards the cycle path, where you turn left towards Trieste to reach the junction with the traditional route in a few minutes.  In short, you will reach the former Sant’Antonio-Moccò railway station, which had several tracks. Continue slightly downhill along the route, passing viaducts, small stations, tunnels, countryside, and woods, until you reach the outskirts of the city and end up in the bustling district of San Giacomo. From this lively, multi-ethnic district and its church in the square, head towards Colle di San Giusto with its archaeological remains, castle, and cathedral, from where you descend into the old town to reach the town hall and emerge in Piazza Unità d’Italia: the heart of Trieste, the largest square on the sea in Europe. All the buildings overlooking the square, as well as those along the seafront leading to the railway station, recount the city’s various memories and their deep connection with the sea, port traffic, insurance companies, and their inhabitants. Churches of different religious denominations and museums recall the various ethnic groups that have made this Central European city important in the world over time. From the railway station, you can reach Barcola via Viale Miramare or via an alternative route that crosses the Old Port, which will soon be transformed into a new modern seaside district and an important business, museum, and conference center. Continuing along the seafront, crowded with bathers in the summer months, you reach Miramare Castle and its park, so closely linked to the unfortunate story of Maximilian and Charlotte (you can return to Trieste to visit the city in the evening or to stay overnight, by bus or regional train).
